Critical Thinking and Technical Skills

Whether data analysts work at a data analysis company such as https://shepper.com/ or in-house for a client, they will need solid technical skills as the foundation of their role. This means an in-depth appreciation of technical skills and critical thinking, which is necessary to analyse the data at hand and turn it into meaningful information for management decision-making.

Data Proficiency and Visualisation

Data analysis must be able to work with large volume datasets gathered from a range of sources and cleanse, process and evaluate data for analysis and then communicate the results in a range of visual formats and written reports. They will also work with tools such as Excel, data visualisation software, R, Python and SQL and use these for structured data collection, management and analysis.

Problem-Solving

At the heart of the role, problem-solving is required to transform data into meaningful solutions to business problems. This means finding the root cause of an issue using a robust and structured methodology and then coming up with practical solutions based on solid evidence.

Meticulous and Thorough

Great data analysts are extremely detailed in their work and able to take a thorough and highly structured approach so that accuracy is always maintained. This is vital, as poor-quality data is one of the biggest issues in the data industry, and it can invalidate entire projects.

A Commitment to Continue Learning

The data industry is always evolving, and great data analysts will be naturally curious and ready to keep evolving and learning in their roles. This will allow them to gain rich and cutting-edge skill sets that make them highly in demand and able to choose the roles that most interest them.
