There he meets and falls in love with Arya, an elf princess. He also discovers a bright red stone that is actually a dragon egg. The story takes many twists and turns as Eragon begins to understand the powers of his dragon, Saphira, and save the people who mean so much to him.

The thorn of emberlain characters

Eragon – the main character, orphaned when his uncle betrayed him and his dragon. Eragon was raised by another uncle who had no sons of his own. He is forced into the rebel group the Varden after he discovers a mysterious red stone that hatches into an egg.

Arya – an elf princess who saves Eragon’s life when he is attacked by an Urgal.

Saphira – the dragon who hatches from the egg. She has saved Eragon’s life on more than one occasion, and they form a strong bond throughout the story.

Brom – Murtagh’s father. He meets Eragon in Gil’ead after Arya sends for him, and they form a close relation as he teaches Eragon how to fight with a sword.

Murtagh – the son of king Morzan who grew up as Galbatorix’s slave. He saved Eragon from the prison in Gil’ead and sheltered him at his home with his father, Brom.

Galbatorix – the oppressive king who captures Eragon’s cousin. Eragon’s uncle betrays him and brings him before the king, nearly killing Eragon in the process.

Solembum – an intelligent werecat Eragon encounters after Brom dies.

Galbatorix’ Forsworn – twenty-one men who were Galbatorix’s closest advisers prior to his rise. They were cursed by Galbatorix with dragons when he discovered that they plotted against him. Their names are Durza, Morzan, Jierda, Yarowen, Carvahall, Murtagh, Jeod and Wyrden.

Durza – the Ra’zac’s personal assassin who is feared for his sadistic tendencies. He is nearly invincible, having survived many fights with Eragon during the story.

Jierda – Galbatorix’s right hand man who was later stabbed in the back by Morzan. He met his end at the hands of Murtagh following Durza’s demise.

Morzan – the first and most powerful of the Forsworn, as well as the father of Murtagh. He is responsible for killing Arya’s grandfather.

Saphira – Eragon’s dragon who hatched from an egg hidden within The Vault of Souls; she grew up in secret with Saphira and became best friends with her. She likes to use her intelligence to trick the Ra’zac and Urgals, and she takes great pride in her appearance.
