ps5 vs ps5 digital: What are the difference?

3 min read

The PlayStation brand, which has become synonymous with video games over the years, has finally landed on the fifth generation of Sony consoles. Even in this new generation of consoles, the Japanese company seems to have an advantage, having a large installed base of PS4, well 120 million and has already announced the first interesting exclusives.

This is the first console of the group, launched in two variants, PlayStation 5 Standard and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. In this article, we will see the differences and what the two different versions of Playstation 5 have in common so that you can choose in full awareness, with all the information you need.

Needless to go around it, the difference between the two PS5 models is represented by the absence of the optical reader in the Digital Edition. Even from an aesthetic point of view, the two consoles are difficult to distinguish. The Digital Edition costs less and renounces the player forcing buyers to play only games from the PlayStation Store. This difference can be both a limitation and an advantage :

  • If you are one of those who have long since taken all their titles digitally, and do not watch Blu-ray movies, then the Digital Edition, with its lowest price, represents a great deal ;
  • On the other hand, a large part of your collection is on physical media (Bluray disk) and you still prefer this format (perhaps even to have access to other sources of titles, such as swapping or used), or if you want to have the ability to see movies on disc, then it is better to opt for the standard model (which is slightly more expensive).
  • The player with which the Standard version of PlayStation 5 is equipped supports UHD Blu-Ray in 4K. Each optical disc holds up to 100GB of data.

PlayStation 5 hardware features

The two consoles have the same hardware, apart from the optical reader. The power developed should allow developers to offer a true generational leap. The features of the console are very respectable:

  1. Processor: AMD Ryzen ™ “Zen 2” with 8 cores up to 3.5 GHz;
  2. Graphics processor: AMD Radeon ™ RDNA 2 with frequency up to 2.23 GHz, hardware acceleration for Ray Tracing, declared power 10.3 TeraFLOPS;
  3. Ram memory: 16 GB GDDR6 RAM with 448 GB / s band;
  4. Mass storage: 825GB SSD.

The two consoles are therefore distinguishable only by the presence or absence of the optical reader and can run the same titles. Both consoles will be compatible with 99% of PS4 titles. The backward compatibility is not extended to the previous domestic gaming machines of the Japanese house.

The elements

Looking at the datasheet, you can well understand why the developers said they were thrilled to work with the new console.

Some components will be critically important in developing the next generation of new games. The SSD mass memory will allow very low or non-existent loads and ever-larger levels. The new processor, coupled with the equally powerful GPU, will allow you to reach higher resolutions and a greater number of FPS (frames per second). In addition, the implementation of hardware acceleration for Ray Tracing allows taking the management of lighting and shadows to a new level.
