How technology is changing home security

The constant progression of technology has brought a wave of changes to the way we live, including the evolution of home security.

Smart sensors and locks

Digital locks will register when you’re returning home and unlock the door via Bluetooth from your key fob or mobile. More advanced locks will also link to other systems within your home, such as a digital thermostat to ensure the heating is turned on when you arrive and turned off when you’re away. Wi-Fi locks, while not as secure, can go a step further and check in real time that the door is locked.

Sensors installed on doors and windows can register your presence via motion detection software, which can also be linked to an alarm system. If you are away from home and the system is armed, you can be alerted via your smartphone to any movement detected and alarms can be triggered to warn off potential intruders.

This technology can be implemented in any household, as the example of the 1950s East Sussex seaside home shows, having been kitted out with motion detectors and security systems that alert the homeowner with real-time images of their property.

Monitoring from afar

An all-round automation system will encompass everything from lights and thermostats, to locks, motion detection and alarms. They’re becoming increasingly interactive, allowing users to, for instance, disarm alarms or trigger fire alerts. Home monitoring allows you to remotely view photos, video and statistics from such a system. With the increasing use of wireless and remote systems, it’s more important than ever to ensure protection when it comes to your technology, so trusted endpoint security management from the likes of promisec.com is vital.

Futuristic fingerprinting

Futuristic fingerprinting, once reserved for films, is no longer quite so far-fetched. With the advent of Apple’s iPhone fingerprint software, this technology is, while still in its early stages, being introduced elsewhere, and it’s something we could see on home door locks in the near future.

Sophisticated smart garages

Working via a network adapter that fits into your router, a smart garage operates via your provider and a mobile app. Anyone wanting to access your garage can be remotely let in or out, while motion detectors will ensure that the area is safe before the door opens and closes.
